SUMMARY:NMR discussion group
DESCRIPTION:Sarah Codd\, Dept of Mechanical Engineering\, Montana State University\nMagnetic Resonance Studies of Fluid Dynamics in Complex Systems \nMagnetic resonance microscopy (MRM) allows characterization of the spatial heterogeneity of materials on the 10 microns imaging scale. Within this spatial resolution molecular level properties such as magnetic relaxation and translational molecular diffusion which provide nanometer scale molecular dynamic information are obtained. Sarah is the co-director of a MR facility at Montana State University which houses several state of the art MR spectrometers and has ongoing research projects in several areas of interest to engineering. All projects involve complex fluids and/or complex flow geometries. An introduction to the technique\, its potential applications and results from several projects will be presented. Systems studied include biofilms in porous media\, bioactivity in the subsurface\, supercritical fluid dynamics\, two phase imbibition of rocks\, colloidal suspensions and gel phase transitions. \n Lecture sponsored jointly by STL-NMR and the Condensed Matter seminar series \nPlease join us for informal discussion over soda\, chips and beer after Sarah Codd’s seminar. For more information call Mark Conradi at 935-6418. \nCrow/Compton are near the northeast corner of the Hilltop campus. There is parking available in the lot just to the east\, near Millbrook (=Forest Park Parkway) and Skinker. Access is through the main doors to Crow Hall (southeast corner of the building).
