SUMMARY:Gender Bias in STEM
DESCRIPTION:Laura McCullough has been studying issues regarding gender and physics for over twenty years. She has a BA and MS in physics\, and a PhD in Science Education. She has given numerous talks on gender issues across the US\, and has published on a variety of issues on gender and science. Laura’s current job is Professor of Physics at the University of Wisconsin–Stout. \nIn this talk\, Dr McCullough will discuss the latest research on reasons for the lower number of women and gender minorities in chemistry and STEM more broadly\, including unconscious bias and stereotype threat. She will also share actions that individuals and departments can take to help increase awareness of bias and work to reduce it. \nFor details on pre-registration\, please scan the QR code: \n20221013-WCC-reg.png

SUMMARY:Understanding the Identity of the Latino: Fighting Bias
DESCRIPTION:Register HERE \nThe aim of this workshop is to help participants understand the diversity of Latin people that are present in the United States Workforce. \nFighting stereotypes that plague minority groups is a key aspect to improving diversity at any workplace. The threat of being stereotyped has been shown to not only have an effect on minorities by the way they engage at work\, but by having an influence in their leadership\, entrepreneurship\, and competitiveness. A way to fight these detrimental stereotypes that lead to some of the conscious and unconscious biases we may have against minority members we work with is by furthering our understanding of their culture and identity. The aim of this workshop is to help participants understand the diversity of Latin people that is present in the United States and that we may work with. By learning about the diversity of their identity and the diversity present in this multi-racial community\, we can help destroy the typical and detrimental stereotypes that currently exist of Latin Americans in our society.

SUMMARY:“Let’s talk race and racism” podcast/discussion
DESCRIPTION:The Committee on Minority Affairs (CMA) launches its podcast/discussion series “Let’s Talk Race and Racism”\, engaging members and the broader St. Louis community in fostering togetherness\, developing shared language\, and building comfort and courage to better discuss race and racism.  \nHoping to help people understand how to take personal action to build their own race consciousness and to move toward a more diverse and inclusive Local Section in response to many national conversations such as #BlackoutSTEM and in response to the cries for justice for the loss of unarmed Black lives. \nWe ask all members and the community to come prepared to listen\, learn\, engage\, be uncomfortable and possibly abandon their own ideas for new ones as they hear vulnerable conversation from primarily people of color. Register here for one\, several\, or all of the events in this series. You will receive a Zoom invite for the events you select. \nToday\, Part 5: \nThe topic and organization today has been changed to address last week’s incident at the US Capitol.  \nTopic: Reflections on America’s Disparate Responses to RiotDescription: January 6\, 2021\, Americans witnessed a planned targeted attack on our US Capitol in an act that many are calling an insurrection and attempt to overrun the government and circumvent the will of the America people as members of Congress certified the November 3rd election results. As the images exploded from Washington it was hard not to notice the stark difference in police and military presence before\, during and after the Capitol attacks in comparison to Black Lives Matter and other protests organized by people of color. So let’s talk.

The St. Louis Public Radio newsroom\, like other local media outlets\, covered the story. But the news organization decided it needed to do more. They tasked two people — reporters Tim Lloyd and Emanuele Berry — to design a project that would examine race in St. Louis. The result was the We Live Here Podcast.  \nThis month’s theme will be COVID-19 xenophobia as we listen to Asian-American persons from our community talk about the racism they faced at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss…(Virtual) Cocktails with Chemists – Chemistry in Your Home \n Of course everything is a chemical\, but your home is full of pure chemicals\, chemical compounds and solutions you use on a daily basis.  Join us for a Scavenger Hunt via Zoom to find Chemistry in Your Home!  \nThere will be three rounds of increasing difficulty. Join us for Round 1 at 5:20\, Round 2 at 5:40\, and Round 3 at 6:00 PM. We’ll give you a list of chemicals\, and you’ll need to scavenge your home for them and then show your found items on to the group on the Zoom meeting. You will be judged on speed and accuracy.   Will there be prizes?? No! But there will be accolades from the judges\, friendly faces\, and a chance to meet new people. \nRegister here and receive a Zoom link. \nBrought to you by the St. Louis Local Section of the American Chemical Society.

\nToday\, Part 2: \nWe will listen to an episode from the What Next podcast with Mary Harris. Mary has reported throughout the public radio system\, for NPR\, Marketplace\, and WNYC. This short daily show is here to help you make sense of things\, when the news feels overwhelming. This month’s theme will be the accuracy of American history and how we create American traditions that fail to account for racial trauma and pain.
