RSVP to bruce_ritts@steris.com by noon on June 8th to ensure that enough food is ordered.\nSpeaker’s notes: Since the introduction of HPLC nearly 40 years ago\, many new stationary phases have been developed to achieve faster\, more efficient separations. There are several ways of engineering a column in order to achieve these goals\, including: increasing packed bed homogeneity\, decreasing intra-particle volume\, narrowing particle size distribution\, and decreasing the diffusion distance\, which can be achieved\, in part\, by using smaller particles. It can also be achieved by using superficially-porous particles\, which have a solid silica core and porous outer shell. Despite the fact that this technology has been around since the 1970s\, HPLC columns containing superficially porous (aka\, fused-core\, core-shell\, pellicular) particles have been improved to the point where rapid\, highly efficient separations can be achieved for some applications.\nIn this presentation\, we discuss and compare the impact of extra-column band spreading\, LC system operating pressure\, and separation temperature for sub–2-µm particle and superficially porous particle columns using both conventional HPLC and UPLC® instrumentation.

DESCRIPTION:The St Louis Section of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy will hold its annual tour speaker meeting on April 15\, 2010. Dr R Kenneth Marcus\, Professor of Chemistry at Clemson University will be the guest speaker. The title of his talk will be «Novel LC/MS Characterization of Nutraceuticals and Dietary Supplements – What’s Really in the Bottle and Does It Matter?» His presentation will address the use of liquid chromatography-particle beam mass spectrometry (LC-PBMS) to characterize botanical products in dietary supplements. \n6 pm: dinner\n7 pm: presentation\nThe meal is free for students\, $10 for SAS members\, and $15 for others. Hands-on chemistry is limited to the first 25 students to RSVP. \nSpeaker’s notes: To better understand bird life and behavior\, and using the tools chemists have used for years\, avian biologists and chemists have recently begun to examine more closely the chemistry associated with birds. In this fascinating look at the chemistry of birds\, chemist and birder Dr. Dwight Chasar talks about the chemical pigments that give birds color\, the chemicals birds use for survival in the wild\, chemicals that nearly extirpated raptors\, and the use of stable isotopes to understand bird migration. From the simplicity of bird poop to the complexity of bird DNA analysis\, chemistry is playing a big role in our understanding of bird dynamics.
