 6 Leopold Marcus Award competition, 4 pm, Baer-Fuller Hall (Lecture Hall 2), Saint Louis University

The competition consists of presentations based on the undergraduate research projects of senior chemistry majors at Saint Louis University. The candidates, chosen by the faculty, will be making fifteen-minute presentations. The winner of the award is determined by vote of the professional chemists in the audience. Undergraduate students at any college or university within the St Louis Section borders are eligible to present a poster or an oral presentation based on their research. Each presenter receives a Certificate of Participation; awards are given for “Exceptional Presentations.”

Elementary (K-5): Participation Awards distributed to chemistry-related projects. Three people needed for about one hour each between 3 and 8 pm. No judging involved.
Secondary (6th–12th grade): judging of chemistry-related projects 3–8:30 pm (please volunteer for at least 2½ hours). Free dinner for judges (5–6 pm). Judges must be present at 8:30 to pick winners.

16–22 National Chemistry Week is loosely defined as October 16–22 this year, with the theme, “Chemistry—Our Health, Our Future.” If you want to participate in chemistry’s biggest annual outreach event, either by conducting an activity or by volunteering for ones already planned, contact Greg Wall at 314.435.6487 or gwall37@msn.com. The St Louis Section’s NCW Chemistry Expo will be at the St Louis Science Center on October 15th from 10 am to 4 pm.

20 Midwest Award festivities at the Midwest Regional Meeting (MWRM) in St Louis
the Midwest Award Symposium from 3 to 5 pm, the Midwest Award Address from 5 to 6 pm, both in the Zurich Room, followed by the Midwest Award Reception from 6 to 7 pm in the Matterhorn Room. If you register to attend the MWRM, you can plan to attend and or all of these events, in honor of the 2011 Midwest Award winner, Xiao Cheng Zeng, Ameritas Distinguished University Professor of Chemistry at University of Nebraska–Lincoln. You can add the Award Banquet, 7–9 pm, to your meeting registration for an additional $30. You can attend the Awards Banquet even if you don’t attend the MWRM. Just fill in the events-only registration form and submit it with your payment.
